  • FORECAST: Conservative (318, – 13), Labour (262 seats, +30), Liberal Democrats (13 seats, +5).
  • Prime minister says she will attempt to form a government as largest party.
  • Tory MP calls for her to make way for a successor.
  • Jeremy Corbyn says Labour is prepared to form a minority government.
  • Britain could be forced back to the polls within months.

LONDON — Theresa May will refuse to stand down as Conservative party leader and prime minister after failing to win a majority in the general election, according to multiple reports.

The prime minister is due to make a statement later this morning following the final results of the general election in which the Conservatives lost a swathe of seats to Jeremy Corbyn’s Labour party.

May has faced calls from Labour and from backbench Conservative MP Anna Soubry to stand down.

“She needs to consider her position,” Soubry said.

“Theresa did put her mark on this campaign, she takes responsibility as she always does, and I know she will, for the running of the campaign.”

She added: “I’m afraid we ran a pretty dreadful campaign. That’s me being generous.”

However, despite being called to go, May is expected to insist that she will seek to form a government based on having won the most seats and votes in the election.

The announcement follows a historic night in which the Conservatives lost their majority in parliament after voters rejected her call for a bigger mandate in order to “strengthen her hand” in Brexit negotiations.
