Singaporeans showed varying reactions upon Izzah’s detainment
Singapore was shook by the news of Syaikhah Izzah Zahrah Al Ansari’s detainment (insert link to TehTarik’s article). The 22-year-old was detained for radicalism under the Internal Security Act (ISA), as stated by Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) on 12 June 2017.
The news went viral on Facebook as many had shared the posts from various news platforms such as TodayOnline, Channel News Asia and The Straits Times. Singaporeans also commented and shared their thoughts by commenting on various posts.
Below are the reactions made by netizens:
Many netizens were disappointed and ridiculed her actions. The responses shows how upset they are towards her family for not seeking help from the authorities. However, both Muslims and non-Muslims were showing encouragement for Singaporeans to stand united against terrorism.
Darren Tan commented that “Singaporeans, especially the Muslims, need to come out strongly against such radicalism and denounce such extremist views.” We agree with him as this is when we can stand united as Singaporeans against such threats.
Angelo Fletcher also added that “We must stay united against such threats, report on our friends and maybe even family if necessary. Islam, as are all other religions, exist to guide humans to be better people, not criminals.”
Roslan Maulod also commented, “Why do we make negative assumptions about others? Let us break the habit this #Ramadan. If ever we have to assume, make it a good one!”
We felt moved upon seeing such comments as they encouraged Singaporeans to stand as one in order to counter such threats. This proves that Singaporeans are not easily wavered by such news and are united to protect their country.
With Izzah’s case, it shows that anyone can be easily influenced to radicalism, regardless of age, especially with easy information via internet. We encourage those who have information related to terrorism and radicalism report to the authorities immediately.
