Real Madrid star Cristiano Ronaldo accused of €14.7 million tax evasion

Spanish authorities have filed a lawsuit against Real Madrid forward Cristiano Ronaldo for an alleged €14.7 million (£13 million) tax fraud, according to Reuters.
The Madrid prosecutor’s office said Ronaldo, 32, used a “business structure” he created in 2010 to shelter income he received from image rights in the Virgin Islands from 2011 to 2014.
Evidence collected by tax officials will be scrutinised before prosecutors decide whether to charge Ronaldo before the end of June.
If charged and found guilty by a court, The Telegraph said the Portuguese national could face a prison sentence of at least 15 months. But it added that he would likely escape jail as he would be a first-time offender.
Ronaldo said he was not worried about the situation earlier this month. In quotes cited by ESPN, he told Spanish TV station El Chiringuito TV: “I am very relaxed about it the truth is very, very relaxed. I know that these things can be resolved with the best decisions. So I am good. I can say from the depth of my heart, looking straight into the camera.”
Ronaldo may not be the only person under investigation. Carlus Gruzado, the president of GESTHA (the union of employees) at Spain’s tax office, told Cadena Ser that if the judge accepts the prosecutors charges then Ronaldo will be called to give evidence.
Gruzado added: “[Ronaldo] could be charged with three tax crimes, and in this case the minimum punishment would be three to five years. But if he admits the crime that would be lowered.
“These footballers use tax advisors who sometimes cross the tax evasion line, and sometimes it becomes tax crimes. These people should also be investigated, in the Cristiano Ronaldo case his advisors should also be investigated.”
