Producer Ken Kao and Ryan Gosling Are Teaming Up to Make Movies
Movie producer Ken Kao and Ryan Gosling have teamed up to form Arcana, a new film and TV production company that aims to create a wide range of unique and diverse content.
Kao and Gosling previously collaborated on “The Nice Guys”, a detective thriller by Shane Black, and “Song to Song” by Terrence Malick.
Arcana’s first project is biopic “The Favourite”, directed by Yorgos Lanthimos, starring Emma Stone, Rachel Weisz and Olivia Colman.
“The Favourite” centers on Queen Anne, the last monarch of the House of Stuarts, and her “clandestine personal and political machinations,” Variety reported.
For its first film, Arcana partnered with producers Ceci Dempsey of Scarlet Films and Ed Guiney and Lee Magiday of Element Pictures, along with Film4 and Fox Searchlight.
Kao and Gosling also announced their acquisition of “The Underwater Welder”, an acclaimed graphic novel by Jeff Lemire, Deadline noted. They are currently developing it for film with Anonymous Content.
This year, Kao, the son of billionaire GPS pioneer Min Kao, also produced “Hostiles” starring Christian Bale and Rosamund Pike, “The Outsider” starring Jared Leto, and “The Glass Castle” starring Woody Harrelson, Brie Larson and Naomi Watts, to name a few.
Alongside Arcana, Kao will continue running Waypoint Entertainment, his own production banner, and Bloom, which he launched with Alex Walton in May 2014.
Meanwhile, Gosling, who most recently received a Best Actor Oscar nomination for “La La Land”, will return to theaters in October for Denis Villeneuve’s “Blade Runner 2049” alongside Harrison Ford.
