Police are still investigating how zookeeper Rosa King was killed by a tiger on Monday at Hamerton Zoo in Cambridgeshire.

Cambridgeshire police initially said in a statement on Monday night that the “incident is not believed to be suspicious.” But on Tuesday afternoon, a police spokeswoman said King’s death was still “unexplained,” according to the BBC, and a joint probe with Huntingdonshire District Council is ongoing.

Hamerton Zoo, located about 80 miles north of London, issued a brief statement on Monday, calling the incident “a freak accident.”

The zoo said that no animals escaped from their enclosures.

A person who was at the zoo on the day of the attack described a hectic scene to the BBC. Keepers were “throwing meat over the enclosure to try and entice the tiger away, but it was going on probably for 10 to 15 minutes,” the visitor recalled.

A 2013 inspection report seen by The Telegraph criticised the zoo’s emergency procedures and raised concerns about “ageing safety barrier.”

However, the associate director for animal welfare at the Born Free Foundation told the BBC that “it is impossible to say whether there is anything [in the report] that directly relates to what happened on Monday.”

Hamerton zoo is home to four Bengal tigers. A male named Blizzard and his mate Lady Belle arrived at the facility in 2001. Another pair arrived from Germany in 2014.

The tiger that was involved in the attack, which has not been named, has not been put down and was not harmed, The Telegraph reported.
