MAPPED: The sad state of US bridges

This week is “infrastructure week,” according to President Trump.

Since Monday, the president has been pushing one of the cornerstone policy proposals of his presidential campaign: a $1 billion plan to repair America’s failing bridges, roads, and airports. He will make the case for his plan during a rally on Wednesday in Ohio.

Infrastructure spending has long been seen as a policy area in which the administration can score a win, given its popularity among both Democrats and Republicans.

As reported by Business Insider’s Cadie Thompson, the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) gave US roads a D rating in its latest report on the state of American infrastructure. US bridges scored a little better. They got a C. In total, the ASCE estimates it would cost $1 trillion to modernize the US Interstate and highways system.

The sorry state of US bridges was captured in Bank of America’s recently released TransformingWorld Atlas. The annual report uses maps to illustrate global economic, political and investment trends.

The below map shows the location of Americas 600,000 bridges. About 10% of US bridges, or 60,000, are in need of serious repairs. The roads in need of repair are highlighted in red.
