KELANTAN UMNO REP DECLARED BANKRUPT, LOSES SEAT BUT BY-ELECTION NOT NEEDED
KUALA LUMPUR — The Kelantan Speaker has declared the Nenggiri seat vacant after Datuk Mat Yusoff Abdul Ghani was disqualified due to insolvency.
Datuk Abdullah Yakub confirmed that Mat Yusoff was declared bankrupt in November, but said his office was only officially notified yesterday.
“Based on the notice by the Insolvency Department, the Nenggiri state seat was today declared as vacant and Mat Yusoff is no longer its assemblyman,” Abdullah was quoted as saying by the New Straits Times.
The Kelantan Speaker said he will notify the Election Commission of the development on Sunday.
No by-election will be necessary, however, as there is less than two years to the next general election.
Mat Yusoff won the seat in Election 2013 by defeating Mohammad Azihan Che Seman from PKR and the independent Abd Aziz Mohamed.
