Darren Osborne in police van after his arrest.

The family of the Finsbury Park attacker have said they are “devastated” by his actions.

Darren Osborne drove a van into a group of Muslims outside a mosque after they had just finished worshiping at around 12.20 a.m. (BST) on Monday.

A man was pronounced dead at the scene, though it is not clear if this was related to the attack or a previous illness. Eight others were taken to hospital.

In a statement released to UK press, Osborne’s mother, sister and nephew said: “We are massively in shock, it’s unbelievable. It still hasn’t really sunk in. We are devastated for the families, our hearts go out to the people who have been injured.”

They said the 47-year-old was a “troubled man” but insisted he was “not a racist.” They added: “It’s madness. It is obviously sheer madness.”

Speaking to The Sun, Osborne’s mother said: “I’m at my wit’s end. I saw him on TV and recognised him straight away. I just screamed. My son is no terrorist – he’s just a man with problems and I don’t know how to cope with all this.”

Police searched what is believed to be Osborne’s home on Monday. The residential address in Pentwyn, Cardiff, Wales, was examined by forensic experts.
