Baby Born on India’s Jet Airways Flight Gifted Free Plane Tickets for Life
An Indian airline has awarded free airline tickets for life to a baby who was born during a flight from Saudi Arabia to India.
The newborn’s mother was on board Jet Airways flight 9W 569 when she reportedly went into premature labor on the Boeing 737 on Sunday.
Fortunately, a trained nurse named Mini Wilson was among the plane’s passengers and assisted the flight’s crew in the delivery of the infant while at approximately 35,000 feet (10,688 meters).
According to the BBC, the unexpected incident caused the flight to be diverted to the nearest airport in the western Indian city of Mumbai instead of its original destination, which was India’s south-western city of Kochi.
India’s Jet Airways would later confirm to BBC that the mother and her child were immediately brought to a hospital and are currently in good health.
In a separate announcement, the airlines stated that it will be awarding the baby free air tickets for life.
“Being the first baby to be born inflight for the airline, Jet Airways is pleased to offer the newly-born a free lifetime pass for all his travel on Jet Airways,” the airline said.
“Jet Airways commends its crew for their response and promptness that saw them successfully translate their training into life-saving action. The airline expresses its gratitude to Wilson, the onboard paramedic for her guidance,” it added in reference to nurse Mini Wilson.
Expectant mothers are normally allowed to travel by plane until they are 36 weeks pregnant, although airlines usually require a signed letter from a doctor from 28 weeks onwards.
