Yale Dean Placed on Leave for Calling People ‘White Trash’ in Brutal Yelp Reviews
Dean June Chu of Yale University’s Pierson College has been placed on leave following the outrage over the discovery of offensive reviews she wrote on Yelp, one of which degraded a local restaurant’s customers as “white trash” and “low class folks.”
Pierson Head Stephen Davis announced Chu’s leave through a college-wide email on Thursday, Breitbart reported. However, her long-term future with the Ivy League school was not discussed.
“Let me be clear,” Davis wrote. “No one, especially those in trusted positions of educating young people, should denigrate or stereotype others, and that extends to any form of discrimination based on class, race, religion, age, disability, gender identity, or sexual orientation.”
Davis said that Chu’s scathing reviews, particularly the “white trash” remark and another that labeled movie theater employees as “barely educated morons” were “deeply harmful to the community fabric.”
Students witnessing the controversy expressed their disappointment, with one saying, “I look forward to continue having [Chu] as my dean, but this incident has left me and other Piersonites disillusioned.”
Chu admitted her errors through a public apology on Saturday, which Yale College Dean Jonathan Holloway found to be “very honest.” She has not made another statement since.
For now, Chu will not be involved in activities related to Yale’s commencement on May 22 and other student affairs until the end of the academic year.
