LONDON — Theresa May visited Cornwall on the south coast of England today in the latest leg of her general election campaign.

The prime minister has been criticised during these visits for excluding journalists and holding events behind closed doors away from actual members of the public.

This theme continued on Tuesday with journalists from local newspaper CornwallLive reporting that they were locked in a room and banned from filming May while the prime minister toured a local factory.

“Media were locked in a room and banned from filming,” Gareth Barlett reports.

The Conservatives deny the journalists were locked in the room.

However, despite everything, some parts of May’s trip were recorded for posterity.

But unfortunately for the prime minister, one of those moments included photographers capturing her awkwardly eating chips from a plastic cone as she wandered around the streets of Cornwall.

Here are some pictures of May’s visit.

Here’s May introducing herself to the people of Cornwall. The Conservatives will defend six seats in the region on June 8.

She stopped off to chat to workers at AP Diving, a company based in an industrial estate called Water-Ma-Trout.

May wasn’t particularly interested in talking to local press, though. Here’s reporter Graeme Wilkinson trapped in a room with fellow journalists while the prime minister walked around the factory.

The newspaper’s deputy head of content Steve Smith said he had “never known a visit like this”.

May, who is widely expected to the general election with a big majority, soon became peckish and so decided to buy a cone of chips.

All eyes are on the Conservative leader as she prepares to have her first chip.

She did not seem to be impressed.

Was this May’s Ed Miliband moment?
