LONDON — If his Instagram is anything to go by, it’s fair to say that blogger Alex Fletcher, better known as @the.xandwich, spends way too much time eating and reviewing sandwiches.
“In my eyes, sandwiches are life and life is sandwiches,” he told Business Insider.
“And given the wide variety of cultures embedded in the roots of this wonderful city, the sandwich has evolved beyond the floppy, flaccid pieces of cardboard you’re familiar with from your local supermarket to a handheld item of unquestionable beauty.”
In honour of National Sandwich Week, taking place from May 14 to 20, we asked the sarnie connoisseur to reveal his favourite sandwiches in the city under £11. “These are what I would personally hunt for if ever disgustingly ravenous and in need of a breaded feast,” he said.

Free Range Pork Meatballs from Dusty Knuckle Bakery — £5.50
“In my opinion, the best bakers in London, hands down. Not only do they bake better than Paul Hollywood, but they also make mean sandwiches at the most mind-bogglingly reasonable prices.”

Le Bacon Butty from Le Swine — £6
“This glorified bacon butty honestly silenced me the first time I ate it, as the duck egg and mushroom ketchup dripped down my wrist. I shook my head, walked off to compose myself, and then returned to the handsome James to award him a verbal 10/10 — never had I done that before. Harmonious, delicious, and downright filthy.”

Kid Goat Kofta from Gourmet Goat — £6
“Goat, who’d have thunk it? Not normally on your mother’s curry or stroganoff list, the goat from Nick and Nadia is soft and yummy. Pair that with bouncy pitta, tzatziki, and a feisty herb chilli sauce, and you have the most delectable on-the-go wrap.”

“As a local of Shepherd’s Bush, I’m all for promoting local businesses, and I’m honoured to have Matt and his team right on my doorstep. I dare not think how much cash I’ve spent in here getting boozed and eating endless burritos, but you know what? There’s no way I’m stopping, I’ll run that wallet drier than the Sahara. The acidity from the pickled slaw is quite literally out-of-this-world.”

“Jack Padoan has created a perfect marriage: Lincolnshire sausage with piadina bread from Italy. The combination actually reflects the harmony between his rather rare, but delightful, heritage. “Pitmaster Willy threw in the towel as a sustainability consultant to learn the art of smoking and BBQing meat… and what a brilliant decision that turned out to be! Slow cooked for umpteen hours and laid delicately on brioche buns, his sandwiches will quite literally melt your hearts.”

“In short, Max is a guy who owns a shop that sells sandwiches and booze. It’s, therefore, no surprise to hear of the recent acclaim he has attracted from punters across the City, in particular for the Ham, Egg ‘n Chips. “As London’s first gourmet kebab joint, the team at Le Bab have absolutely nailed their flavour combinations, mixing free-range meats with homemade breads using seasonal ingredients, upgrading that polystyrene meat box we’ve all been known to devour after a night on the tiles. It helps that their head chef is a biology graduate and has had a stint at Le Gavroche as sous chef.”
