LONDON — Getting a degree in business or management can be a springboard into a lucrative career in banking or finance.
But where in the UK is it most difficult to get onto such a course?
This week, the Guardian published its annual ranking of the UK’s best universities, which ranks establishments according to a number of factors including course satisfaction, student to staff ratio, and career prospects.
Business Insider took a look at the Business, Management, and Marketing subindex to see where getting onto those courses is the trickiest.
The ranking of entry standards takes into account the average UCAS tariff score of new students entering the system and offers an accurate picture of how difficult it is to get into each subject at every university.
See which faculties make the cut below. For reference, an A* at A-level is usually worth 56 UCAS points, an A is usually worth 48 points, and a B is typically worth 40.
= 10. Bristol — Business, management, and marketing degrees school require an average of 181 UCAS points for entrants. Bristol was only good enough for 39th overall in the ranking for those subjects, however.
= 10. Bath — Another university in the south-west, Bath is the second best business school in the UK, but only the tenth most difficult to get into. Average entrants require 181 points, the same as nearby Bristol University.
9. Edinburgh — Edinburgh was 37th overall in the Guardian’s business, management, and marketing degree ranking, but lower in terms of entry standards. 182 UCAS points was the average entry tariff for students.
8. King’s College London — London’s third most difficult business school to get into, KCL students needed an average of 186 UCAS points to get a place on a business, management, or marketing course.
7. Warwick — With alumni including the Bank of England’s chief economist Andy Haldane, it’s no surprise that doing a business degree at Warwick is no easy feat. Entrants required an average of 187 UCAS points this year.
= 5. Glasgow — The average entry tariff for a business, management, or marketing degree at Glasgow is 188 points, tied with the prestigious London School of Economics. The Scottish university ranks in 46th place in the overall subindex.
= 5. London School of Economics. LSE is ranked as the 32nd best university in terms of the overall business, management, and marketing subindex, with a percentage score of 79.3% awarded by the Guardian. Entrants require an average of 188 entry points.
4. UCL — UCL fell just short of the 200 point mark when it comes to UCAS points needed to get into its business school, with 193 required on average. That makes its the hardest business school to get into in London, and second most difficult in England.
3. Strathclyde — Strathclyde is the second hardest university in Scotland to study business and management, with a huge 206 UCAS points clocking in as the average entry standard.
2. St Andrews — Not only is St. Andrews the hardest business school in the Scotland to get into (average entrants require an average of 210 UCAS points) it is also Scotland’s best — and the second best in the UK.
1. Oxford — One of the oldest universities in the world, Oxford only offers one straight business course: a BA (hons) in economics & management, for which it ranks first on the overall business, management, and marketing subindex. Like all of its courses, Oxford’s entry requirements are very stringent: The average UCAS entry tariff is 237 points.
