Italy’s Eurovision entry bizarrely starred a gorilla.

Portugal won the Eurovision song contest for the first time in the competition’s history, with 27-year-old Salvador Sobral storming into the lead with 785 points.

Sobral won with a song written by his sister, “Amar Pelos Dois”, and was a favourite with both the international jury and the public. The song’s title literally translates as “Love for the both”, and is a heartfelt ballad about lost love.

Here’s the song:

The gentle song won over more energetic performances from Moldova, whose song “Hey Mamma” won fans over with an amazing sax solo.

The player quickly became known on Twitter as “epic sax guy” — but the Moldovans only came third.

Then there was the bizarre entry from Italy, whose stage act featured a gorilla. Italy was the favourite to win, but only came sixth.

The other standout, strange act from the night came from Romania, which came seventh with 282 points. This is considerably better than last year, when Romania was barred from the contest because of debts owed by the country’s national broadcaster.

Romania’s song this year was called “Yodel It!”, and featured rapping mixed in with yodelling. Yodelling’s better known in Switzerland, of course, but that didn’t stop Romania giving it a shot.

Finally, here’s the UK entry, starring Lucie Jones in a gold dress and a mermaid-like shell. The song didn’t do that well, given the UK came in 15th with 111 points, but it’s still the best result the country has had in five years. Brits commenting on Twitter agreed it was one of the better UK entries to Eurovision — not least because it felt like a love letter to the European Union after the Brexit vote.
