GEORGE TOWN: Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng’s information officer Zaidi Ahmad was slapped by a protester outside the Simpang Enam mosque here during a commotion.
Zaidi, 48, who is a former Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF) officer, is believed to have approached a group of protesters headed by Jalinin Muslimin Pulau Pinang chairman Mohamed Hafiz Mohamed Nordin, who was speaking to the crowd.
The group was at the mosque at Macalister Road to protest against alleged interference of the state government in the issuance of fatwa by the state Fatwa Committee.
A scuffle ensued when Zaidi approached Mohamed Hafiz to ask if he had details on which fatwa the state had interfered.
The group dispersed after plainclothes policemen broke up the commotion.
Zaidi, a former Major in the RMAF, was in the limelight after he was dismissed for voicing his discontent over the use of indelible ink in the 2013 polls to the mass media.
A court martial sacked him from the RMAF on Jan 13, 2015.
He was appointed information officer to the Chief Minister on March 18 last year.
