NAJIB WILL WIN IN EVENT OF 3-CORNERED FIGHTS IN GE14 – RAFIZI SURVEY

A survey by the PKR-linked Invoke on the public’s choice for prime minister indicates that in a three-cornered contest, Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak has a slim edge over Pakatan Harapan.

Close to 18,000 people were surveyed. Of this, 31 percent chose Najib, 28.5 percent opted for a candidate from Harapan, and 6.1 percent picked PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang.

Whereas, 34.4 percent of the respondents did not answer.

As for Harapan, there were eight possible candidates listed.

The most popular choice for prime minister besides Najib was Anwar Ibrahim, who was backed by 8.1 percent of respondents, followed by Hadi (6.1 percent).

Malaysian prime ministers are not directly elected but chosen from the the coalition that has the most parliament seats.

For the past 13 elections, the top leader of Umno, which is the backbone of the ruling coalition BN, has become the prime minister by convention.

However, PKR vice-president and Invoke coordinator Rafizi Ramli believed that the poll results could reflect voting sentiments.

The survey was conducted from Feb 6 to May 23.

44pct back Najib as PM

Respondents were split on whether they supported Najib’s actions as prime minister. Equal numbers (44 percent) backed and rejected Najib’s conduct while 12 percent said they did not know the answer.

Rafizi chose to interpret this as 56 percent of respondents not favouring Najib.

He also postulated that if other BN leaders were included as choices for the respondents, the percentage of those who would choose Najib as prime minister could be even lower.

He also hypothesised that of those respondents who didn’t give answers could be opposition supporters.

“Malaysians don’t like to answer political questions,” he said.
Meanwhile, Rafizi said Invoke’s survey could not be compared to a survey by Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia’s (Bersatu) survey presented earlier this month.

This is due to numerous factors, such as the different time period that the poll was conducted, as well as the different questions asked.

The Bersatu survey conducted between July and August last year, found PAS to be the most popular party at that time, surpassing even BN.

However, the Bersatu survey also suggested that it’s president Muhyiddin Yassin was Malaysia’s choice for prime minister.
