MAYHEM IN KL: 4 SHOT DEAD 31, ARRESTED

FOUR robbers were shot dead, 31 were arrested in shootouts and bar brawls across Kuala Lumpur, hours after a public holiday on Lord Buddha’s birthday.

The first incident broke out in Kuala Lumpur’s largest entertainment hub, TREC where 40 people were involved in a fight following a shoving match earlier in a pub.

Ten pub patrons – five from the United Kingdom, two from Ireland and three Malaysians – were arrested. Two of them suffered serious injuries and have been warded at the Kuala Lumpur Hospital while the others received outpatient treatment.

Almost at the same time in Bangsar, some 13km away, at least 30 people were involved in another scuffle.
Police rounded up 21 people, four of them women, after the fight in Jalan Telawi.

And this afternoon, police gunned down four robbers after a chase which ended in Taman Sri Rampai, Setapak.

The crime wave started with a ripple at 2am today at Arte Bar on Jalan Tun Razak, when a minor misunderstanding between a local and a Briton escalated into a brawl of 40 people from outside the pub.

Two onlookers – a businessman and his bodyguard – fired shots in the air in an attempt to stop the fighting, but the brawlers only stopped when police arrived at the scene.

Police arrested 10 suspects, between the ages of 17 and 32, and also seized the pistols of the businessman and his bodyguard. Both are said to be licensed gunowners.

Kuala Lumpur police chief Amar Singh said the 10 are being investigated for rioting while the businessman and his bodyguard are being investigated under the Firearms Act 1960.

About 3.30m in Bangsar, police moved in on about 30 people fighting in front of a banana leaf rice restaurant.

The New Straits Times reported a car reversed into the police party, almost mowing them down.

The car then sped towards Jalan Ara and almost rammed into another police patrol car. Policemen fired a shot at the car, hitting
the front fender. The driver fled and abandoned the car in front of Maybank in Bangsar Baru.

Brickfields district police chief Sharul Othman Mansor told the NST police found three motorcycle helmets, a metre-long rod, a knife, a baton and a bloodstained jacket inside the car.

Police also seized two cars, a Toyota Vellfire and Perodua Myvi.

One of the men arrested and who sustained injuries in the brawl was sent to the Universiti Malaya Medical Centre.

Meanwhile, about noon, police shot dead four men after they had committed a robbery.

Police seized an undisclosed amount of money in the Honda Civic used by the robbers, Berita Harian reported.
