IPHONE 8 TESTING NOT GOING WELL: REPORTS
Reports are saying that production of the iPhone 8 is running into problems that could push back the phone’s launch by up to three months to October or even November.
The difficulties concern the device’s A11 processing chip and OLED screen.
“Apple’s OLED model iPhone 8 volume shipments are likely to be delayed longer than we had previously expected,” equity research firm JL Warren Capital says in a report published by Singapore’s Smartkarma.
“This week, we confirmed with our sources in Taiwan, that the most recent build of the A11 wafer failed it’s (sic) third round of testing. The next A11 wafer production re-qualification test run will occur this week with the results expected by second week in June.”
If true, it could put a damper on plans for mass production of the chips on June 10.
The report doesn’t mention Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. by name, but DigiTimes cited an industry source with knowledge on the matter as saying that TSMC’s 10-nanometer A11 chips could be delivered in bulk to Apple assembly partner Foxconn by the second half of July.
The other headache Apple is dealing with involves the displays. It is struggling to integrate its Touch ID fingerprint-detection technology into the OLED screens, according to Cowen & Co analyst Timothy Arcuri.
