HOW CRAZY! SHELL CHARGES DOUBLE FOR FUEL PRICES, APOLOGIZES FOR ‘ERROR’
PETALING JAYA – Shell has apologised after the new weekly petrol prices were accidentally set at almost double the official prices.
The company said in a statement on Thursday that the error was rectified immediately but 160 transactions had been made nationwide based on the higher prices between midnight Wednesday and 1.30am Thursday.
“If you have filled up at any of our stations during that time, please kindly check your receipt and do bring it back to the station where you made the purchase for reimbursement of the difference,” the statement said.
Motorists knew that fuel prices had gone up the third week of May with RON95 at RM2.08 and RON97 at RM2.36, effective Wednesday midnight.
But some alert customers who filled up between midnight Wednesday and 1.30am Thursday were shocked to find that their receipts showed RM4.09 for a litre of RON95.
It turned out that the computer systems at Shell stations nationwide had been readjusted with the wrong prices – RM4.09 per litre of RON95 and RM4.65 per litre of RON97.
Some customers who realised the “new prices” checked with the cashier counters at the stations and embarrassed station managers immediately refunded them and apologised.
Many took photos of their receipts and posted them on social media.
A petrol station operator in Old Klang Road here said he knew about the wrong prices but a customer insisted on purchasing the fuel with his credit card at around 1am Thursday. When the customer noticed the prices on the receipt, he scolded the operator at the station.
Several other stations said they closed their outlets for an hour and reopened after the problem was fixed.
In Penang, the state Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Ministry issued a statement on its Facebook confirming the glitch after a check was made at 48 Shell stations in the state.
The state director, Mohd Nawardi Saad, advised those who had refueled shortly after mid.
