Chelsea cancels ‘inappropriate’ Premier League victory parade after Manchester bombing

Chelsea were crowned 2016-2017 Premier League champions and were due to parade the title through London on Sunday.
Premier League champion Chelsea cancelled its victory parade in London on Sunday following the Manchester terror attack.
“Everyone associated with Chelsea Football Club offers our heartfelt condolences to those affected by Monday’s terror attack in Manchester,” an official club statement read.
“Our thoughts go out to all the victims, and their families and friends.”
Salman Abedi, the 22-year-old suicide bomber, killed 22 and injured at least 64 when he detonated an improvised bomb in the foyer of Manchester Arena in central Manchester on Monday.
“In light of these tragic events, we feel it is inappropriate to go ahead with the victory parade in London on Sunday given the heightened security threat announced by the government, and recognising that this is a developing situation,” Chelsea added.
“Having consulted with the Metropolitan Police, Hammersmith & Fulham Council, and other authorities, we know the emergency services would have been as professional as ever, but we would not want in any way to divert important resources by holding an additional, non-ticketed event on the streets of London.”
As a mark of respect, Chelsea will wear black armbands during its FA Cup final match against Arsenal at Wembley Stadium on Saturday. Chelsea will also “make a donation to a fund supporting the victims of this horrific attack.”
