‘NOBODY WANTS TO RAPE HER’? POOR THING – WOMEN GROUPS COMMISERATE WITH UMNO MP, SLAM CRUDE, SEXIST REMARK
PETALING JAYA – Women leaders from both sides of the political divide today came to the defence of Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said, after she was targeted in a post by Facebook user “Otai Bersih” on April 20.
The offending post featured a picture of the Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department with the caption: “Nobody is willing to rape me”.
The post has since been taken down.
MCA Wanita chief Datuk Heng Seai Kei said action must be taken immediately against the owner of the account, describing it as “something very serious”.
“If no action is taken by the authorities, this might send the wrong message to the public, and may happen again in the future.”
Selangor state assembly speaker Hannah Yeoh said on Twitter such attacks, that show disrespect to women, should never be condoned.
“This is horrible. Solidarity with Azalina. Personal attacks like this can never be justified,” she said.
Damansara Utama state assemblyman Yeo Bee Yin said the personal attack can never be condoned, especially when it blatantly violates the dignity of women.
MIC Wanita chief Mohana Muniandy said while it was uncertain if the post was politically motivated, it was totally uncalled for, and showed the account owner “was sick”.
“These are all psychopaths on the loose. Just because you can write anything on social media, it doesn’t mean you can post remarks like that,” she said.
Gerakan Wanita chief Datuk Tan Lian Hoe said the post was unnecessary, improper and unethical, stressing that freedom of expression has its limits.
Following the incident, Azalina, through her aide Chyairreil Annwar Akmal, lodged a report with the police and the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission.
“The content is crude,” a statement from Azalina’s office said on Tuesday.
